The Jets officially placed rookie Devin Smith on injured reserve Friday. In a corresponding move, they signed practice-squad linebacker Taiwan Jones to the active roster.
Smith, their second-round draft pick, was carted off the field during the third quarter of the Jets’ blowout win over the Tennessee Titans last week. An MRI the following day confirmed that he tore his right anterior cruciate ligament, the team said. The former Ohio State star finished the season with nine catches for 115 yards and one touchdown.
The 6-3, 252-pound Jones came to camp as an undrafted free agent in May, was cut at the end of training camp and was signed to the practice squad in September. The Michigan State product played 82 defensive snaps in four preseason games, registering eight tackles (including one for a loss), and 42 on special teams, making three tackles.
With Smith done for the season and slot receiver Jeremy Kerley nursing a calf injury, Jets coach Todd Bowles said on Monday that the team would consider signing a free agent, but it wasn’t guaranteed. “We’ve got [Kenbrell] Thompkins, and depending on how Kerley comes around, we’re looking around,’’ Bowles said. “We may or may not do something with that spot.”
The Jets (8-5) did not practice on Friday, but Kerley was upgraded to probable for Saturday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys (4-9).
