Jets Q&A: LaRon Landry's two flags costly

What was LaRon Landry thinking?

The Jets love the safety's physical presence on the football field, but they could do without his occasionally over-aggressive plays.

Landry was flagged twice in Sunday's loss -- for a late sideline hit on Emmanuel Sanders in the second quarter and a horse-collar takedown of Antonio Brown early in the third. The penalties netted a combined 28 extra yards for the Steelers.

Landry maintained after the game that he's "going to continue to play the way I play" but said he will make sure he doesn't put himself in the same situation again.

The hard-hitting safety said his intent wasn't to horse-collar Brown. When asked about the late hit on Sanders, Landry said he wasn't looking at the sideline on the play. "When a guy's running like that . . . ," he said, "if he's full-go, I'm going to try my damnedest" to tackle him.

Rex Ryan said he didn't think the sideline hit was "vicious" by any means but added: "You have to do it within the confinements of the rules. We have to be smart and we have to learn from it."

The Jets signed Landry as a free agent in March because of his fiery style of play, but secondary coach Dennis Thurman said this past week that the coaching staff still is trying to show Landry that every hit doesn't have to be "a kill shot."

Where was Stephen Hill?

After a breakout NFL debut last week, the rookie wideout was virtually nonexistent Sunday. The 6-4 Hill was targeted twice and had zero catches against a Steelers defense that, he said, wasn't "doing anything special."

"Hats off to Pittsburgh. They played a great game," he said. "Tomorrow, we'll start to look at the film and make some adjustments."

Asked about the deep pass that safety Ryan Clark batted away in the second quarter, Hill said, "I could've had that one. He made a big play. Other than that, we just need to make sure we clean up on some things."

Ryan also gave credit to the Steelers for making the rookie a nonfactor.

"They did a great job of press coverage," he said. "They have big, physical corners and they did a great job."

In Week 1 against the Bills, Hill became only the fifth NFL player in the past 25 years to have two receiving touchdowns in his first game, registering 89 yards on five catches.

How did the Jets' O-line do?

After a sack-free game against the Bills last week, the offensive line allowed Mark Sanchez to be sacked twice for a loss of 9 yards. Right tackle Austin Howard was beaten by linebacker LaMarr Woodley for a loss of 6 in the third quarter and Sanchez was sacked by defensive end Cameron Heyward to end the game.

How did former Jet Jerricho Cotchery fare against his old club?

Statistically, it was a quiet day for Cotchery, who finished with just two targets and one catch -- but he made it count. On third-and-3 at the Jets' 7, Cotchery caught a 6-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to set up Heath Miller's 1-yard score in the second quarter. That touchdown put Pittsburgh up 13-10.

How did they adjust without tight end Dustin Keller?

The Jets showed multiple tight end packages against the Steelers, including a four-tight end set in the first quarter to help set up a 14-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes. The extra tight ends fooled the Steelers into thinking the Jets were going to run the ball on third-and-3 from Pittsburgh's 14. Instead, Sanchez hit Holmes on a slant to give the Jets the early lead.
