Jets restructure James Carpenter’s 2016 salary

BOCA RATON, Fla. — In an effort to clear more salary-cap space, the Jets converted $3.69 million of James Carpenter’s $4.45 million base salary in 2016 into a signing bonus, a source confirmed to Newsday.
By doing so, the team will create $2.46 million in cap room.
With the recent free-agent signings of nose tackle Steve McLendon and defensive end Jarvis Jenkins (whose deal still is not yet official), salary-cap maneuvers were expected to be made.
Expect more moves if and when the Jets re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Jets also need to set aside about $5 million for their incoming draft class.
By converting a portion of Carpenter’s base salary, the left guard’s cap number over the next two seasons will jump to around $6.8 million. But by then, the Jets should have much more salary-cap room and flexibility.
