Jets still aren't putting timetable on QB Zach Wilson's return

Zach Wilson spent the early part of practice doing knee and leg exercises with a trainer before getting in a cart and driving over to watch the offense.
Wilson is progressing in his rehab from a bone bruise in his right knee and small meniscus tear. The Jets still aren’t putting a timetable on Wilson’s return and Robert Saleh won’t name his Week 1 starting quarterback yet.
All signs point to it being Joe Flacco, but Saleh said he “can wait to week of” the Jets’ Sept. 11 opener against the Ravens before deciding who starts that game. Saleh indicated that the Jets are running their system regardless who the quarterback is so there is no reason to hurry a decision.
“We’ll have all those discussions,” Saleh said. “But you guys should know me by now. We’re going to run our stuff so it doesn’t really matter. Not that it doesn’t matter but being transparent in those situations won’t matter.”
It will come down to whether Wilson is 100% ready to take snaps and practice in full that week, which seems like a long shot. The Jets have said he won’t play him before then. Wilson had arthroscopic surgery last Tuesday to trim the meniscus and the bone bruise is still healing.
Saleh said Wilson “looks good” and that “he’s locked in” with all the meetings. Saleh also said he’s meeting extra with offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and quarterbacks coach Rob Calabrese to stay on top of things.
The Jets are happy with how Wilson is approaching this. He’s still not at the point when he can “stand for hours at a time,” so he will remain on the cart during practice.
Injury news
Rookie edge rusher Jermaine Johnson and starting cornerback D.J. Reed both left practice and were checked on by trainers.
Johnson appeared to hurt his left foot, but he returned for the end of practice. Reed’s issue was his right leg. He didn’t return, but Saleh said Reed checked out OK.
“Everything looks fine,” Saleh said. “He jammed something up. It looks good.”
Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and offensive lineman Chuma Edoga also sat out part of practice, but Saleh said the Jets were limiting their reps.
