Jets' Woody to retire, a source says

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Apparently, the Jets' coaxing didn't work.
Hopeful of bringing back right tackle Damien Woody, the Jets' top brass put a full-court press on the 12-year veteran Tuesday. But not even phone conversations with Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson were enough to convince Woody to play one more season.
Woody is going to retire, according to a source. The 33-year-old was a salary-cap casualty in February, released in part because he was coming off an Achilles injury suffered in the postseason. But he's completely healed and the Jets were interested in having him return. Instead, the job to protect quarterback Mark Sanchez's right side will belong to either Wayne Hunter -- who agreed to terms on a four-year deal, according to a source -- or Vladimir Ducasse.
Asomugha power play?
Teaming lockdown cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha with All-Pro Darrelle Revis has been a dream for about a year for Jets fans, and it appears Tannenbaum is doing his usual due diligence.
The Jets plan to make a run at Asomugha and have reached out to him, according to ESPN. Asomugha is reportedly intrigued by the metropolitan area.
With the Jets' strapped for cash and currently roughly $1.3 million over the salary cap, Asomugha would likely have to take less to play for the Jets. The Houston Texans reportedly are prepared to offer him a hefty contract, so it could all depend on exactly where Asomugha feels most comfortable.
Edwards due in court
Free-agent WR Braylon Edwards had his court appearance in Cleveland moved up to Wednesday, a Cleveland Municipal Court spokesman told Newsday. The hearing is to see whether he violated his probation after pleading guilty to DUI last Friday.
Edwards was placed on 18 months of probation in January 2010 after pleading no contest to aggravated disorderly conduct due to punching a friend of LeBron James.
More Super talk
What's a day without some Super Bowl talk from the Jets? Dustin Keller chimed in yesterday, saying the Jets have the capability of winning the Big One.
"We feel very strongly that we can do that," the tight end said. "As Rex said, we are going to win the Super Bowl and we have all the ability in the world to do it."
