FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Zach Wilson will lead the Jets’ offense in Denver on Sunday. He hasn’t forgotten what happened the only other time he played there.
“We just didn’t score,” Wilson said. “It’s not a fun feeling.”
The Jets lost, 26-0, last year in Wilson’s third NFL game. They’re returning to Denver a far better team this time. The Jets (4-2) are riding a three-game winning streak. With their next victory they will surpass last season’s total.
“I’m excited, especially after what happened last year,” Wilson said. “I’m excited to go back there and play those guys.”
Wilson hasn’t had to do much the last two games. The Jets have run the ball well, totaling 314 yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Wilson is 24-for-39 for 320 yards and no touchdowns and no interceptions in those games.
If the Jets continue to be as effective running the ball, teams could load up on that, which would open the passing game. Wilson said he’s ready for anything.
“You got to do what’s working,” Wilson said. “The past couple of weeks we’ve been running the ball great and it makes my job easier. There’s going to be games where the teams are going to stuff the middle of the field and we’re going to have to come to life and make something happen.
“Right now the ultimate goal is to win football games. I’m psyched where we are as a team. I feel like we’re growing. There’s still so many things we can get better at.”
Special sauce
Robert Saleh received a video from Richard Sherman after the Green Bay game of Sauce Gardner making a play in coverage. It was another moment that the rookie cornerback impressed his coach.
“He’s a special talent,” Saleh said. “Sherm sent me a little clip of him on a double-move comeback, just an on-the-field camera angle when I was on the bus, and I was like, ‘Damn.” It was a really, really impressive play, especially for a guy his size.
“What’s great about him is he is just absorbing so much information. He knows that he has got a ways to go to get better and he’s relentless in his pursuit to get better. We got a good one.”
