ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - There was a feeling among the Jets' defensive players going into Sunday.

It was not positive.

"Everyone went to practice focused. We made the decision that enough was enough," Bart Scott said.

That feeling resulted from the Dolphins piling up 436 yards of offense a week ago in Miami, and with the Jets' No. 31 ranking in third-down defense.

So the Jets' defense did something about it, turning Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick into a hunted man. He gained 74 of the Bills' 114 rushing yards, but those were scrambles designed to save his own skin. The Jets dominated the line of scrimmage and brought huge pressure on Fitzpatrick, and the defensive players were a lot happier after a 38-14 victory.

"Once we got him on the move, he really couldn't hurt us," said Shaun Ellis, who left the game with a sprained knee suffered on one of the three sacks of Fitzpatrick. "They tried to take some shots down the field, but we held up pretty good in the secondary. Their offense really isn't smooth when you're running around like that."

The Vikings and Brett Favre come to town next Monday night, but before the Jets could plan for that, they were more concerned with getting themselves right on defense and improving their performance on third down. The Bills' 0-for-10 day is sure to move the Jets up in the rankings.

"For us to climb back to where we want to be, everybody has to do their jobs," Scott said.

That started with the Bills' first possession. Marshawn Lynch gained 3 yards, but he had to break four tackles just to get there. The Jets allowed only nine rushes for 40 yards from the Bills' running backs and only one good drive before the game was out of reach, a two-minute drill at the end of the first half that kept going on a fourth-down conversion out of the Wildcat formation.

"We pretty much imposed our will on them," David Harris said.

Now, with Darrelle Revis and Calvin Pace due back Monday, the defense will be at full strength and on a bit of a roll.

"It's a long way back to No. 1,'' Scott said, referring to the Jets' defensive ranking in the NFL last season. "We did our jobs today."
