Safety Marcus Maye suffered a torn right Achilles in Thursday’s loss and is out for the remainder of the season.

"It’s heartbreaking," Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said.

Maye, the longest-tenured Jet, might have played his final game for the franchise that drafted him in the second round in 2017.

There is no guarantee that Maye, who was playing this season on a one-year franchise tag, will return to the club.

He had said he wants to sign a long-term deal with the Jets, and coach Robert Saleh said Friday that he hopes Maye is with the Jets next season.

But there are a lot of things to consider, including when he will be ready to play as well as his legal situation. Maye faces three misdemeanor charges after being arrested for DUI in Florida in February.

On the field, the Jets would have a difficult time replacing him. He has been the leader of the back end of the defense and one of the Jets’ hardest workers.

Ulbrich said he never felt Maye "got so twisted by the contract" that it affected how he prepared or played.

"He laid it on the line every single time we went out there," Ulbrich said. "It’s heartbreaking from that standpoint and it’s heartbreaking selfishly from our standpoint as a Jets defense."

Saleh was visibly upset when Maye suffered the injury in the second half of Thursday’s 45-30 loss to the Colts.

"I’ve seen this story one too many times in this league," Saleh said. "It’s never good initially. It sucks. But Marcus is a young man. He has a tremendous mindset to him and he is made of grit. His ride’s not over. His story’s not over. If there’s anyone that’s going to be able to come back from this and go make the things that he deserves, it’s Marcus.

"I know it hurts now and it hurts for everybody. I hurt. There’s not very many people who are going more for him than his teammates and his coaches. He’ll come back from this."

Notes & quotes: The Jets expect Corey Davis (hip) and Tevin Coleman (hamstring) to return to practice next week. They both missed the last two games . . . Saleh said tight end Tyler Kroft (chest) will be put on injured reserve.
