Rather than risk getting cut, Mike DeVito restructured his contract with the Jets last week.
DeVito agreed to less money -- his (fully-guaranteed) base salary now stands at $700,000 -- down from $2.26 million, according to NFLPA records. But the defensive lineman stands to earn more due to pay escalators.
According to reports, DeVito's new deal -- which was agreed upon last week, shortly after the team drafted defensive end Quinton Coples in the first round -- still includes the $500,000 roster bonus he received this offseason and his $350,000 workout bonus. He also gets a $950,000 signing bonus and a $750,000 escalator based on playing time.
DeVito signed a three-year extension in September 2009. After reaching 2011 incentives, he was set to earn $2.26M this year.
With so many bodies (including Coples, an expected starter) and not enough spots on the defensive line, the Jets parted ways last week with Ropati Pitoitua.
Pitoitua (6-8, 315) reportedly signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday.
