Minus Revis, Jets go with CB depth in cutting to 53

There were no surprises among the Jets' roster cuts to get to the 53-man limit by Saturday evening. And it's no surprise that the Jets are preparing to play their Sept. 13 season opener without Darrelle Revis.
"Darrelle's not here and we have to plan accordingly," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said on a conference call with reporters Saturday (coach Rex Ryan was not available). "We have six guys at cornerback and we're moving forward with them."
Tannenbaum would not comment on any contract talks with Revis' representatives. But the opener with the Ravens is creeping up and the stalemate doesn't seem to be ending.
Aside from starters Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson, the Jets' first-round pick, Dwight Lowery, Marquice Cole, Drew Coleman and undrafted rookie Brian Jackson are available at cornerback.
"Guys like Marquice Cole and Drew Coleman have gotten better. Depth is a necessity," Tannenbaum said. "And with Darrelle not here, it becomes even more important."
The Jets also embraced depth at skill positions for their 53-man roster: They kept running back Chauncey Washington, who had a strong preseason finale in Philadelphia on Thursday, as well as undrafted rookie tight end Jeff Cumberland, one of four tight ends to make the squad.
But with a large number of experienced players cut by other teams Saturday, Tannenbaum said the Jets will scour the wire for claims until today's noon deadline, so the team is not set.
Revis and wide receiver Santonio Holmes, suspended for the first four games, do not count toward the 53-man total. David Clowney - who has lacked consistency since he joined the team in 2007 - made the cut, but he isn't assured of anything when Holmes returns.
"If he could be more consistent [on special teams], his security would be enhanced," Tannenbaum said. "We're moving forward with him and after that, we'll see."
The Jets were rumored to have interest in recently released former Seahawks receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh, but there is no indication they are looking to add another receiver.
The one player the Jets would love to add is Revis. Tannenbaum said the March trade of a third-round pick to the Chargers for Cromartie, followed by the selection of Wilson with the 29th pick in the April draft, was "some by plan and some of it was by luck."
The Jets could not have known that Revis would hold out through camp and into the season. But this is where they are, with a rookie corner starting where their All-Pro corner should be.
"I don't know if anyone's ever whole," Tannenbaum said. "You look at Ed Reed with the Ravens [on the physically unable to perform list] and Calvin Pace for us; those are two good players. They're down a player, we're down two players.
"We've been saying all along that as an organization, we have to move forward. We're playing Baltimore in a week and that's what we're progressing towards."
