Grading the Jets in NFL Week 4 vs. Tennessee Titans

OFFENSE

The Jets' offense looked good for a few quarters. They scored three touchdowns, which is one more than they had in the first three games. Zach Wilson made some huge and impressive throws and directed the offense well. He threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns. But he also made a few bad throws – one was picked off – and could have sealed the game in regulation if he hadn’t overthrown Corey Davis on third down. He also underthrew Ryan Griffin in overtime for what could have been a touchdown. Having slot receiver Jamison Crowder back really helped the offense and opened things up for Davis, who had four catches for 111 yards. Crowder had seven grabs for 61 yards and a score. The offensive line also did a better job of protecting Wilson. He was sacked just once.

GRADE: B

DEFENSE

The Jets did a tremendous job of generating a pass rush and throwing quarterback Ryan Tannehill off his game. They sacked him seven times, including five on third down. Quinnen Williams had two sacks and his brother Quincy had one, 12 total tackles and some hard hits. The Jets’ red-zone defense was good for much of the game. They allowed 157 rushing yards to Derrick Henry, who you knew would have a big game. He usually does, but the Titans were without top receivers A.J. Brown and Julio Jones. The Jets still have to find a way to not give up chunk yardage on screen passes. That’s hurt them a lot and in this game.

GRADE: A-

SPECIAL TEAMS

Matt Ammendola had a perfect game. He kicked three extra points and two field goals, including what proved to be the game winner in overtime. Returners Braxton Berrios and Ty Johnson combined for 113 return yards. Berrios gave the Jets good field position with an 18-yard punt return that led to Davis’ 53-yard touchdown catch from Wilson on first down. Thomas Morstead averaged 46.2 yards on his punts, with a long of 56.

GRADE: B+

COACHING

The Jets had a good game plan defensively against Tennessee. They blitzed Tannehill early and often and got to him, recording 14 quarterback hits. Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich is getting a lot out of his defense. The offense looked much better. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur bounced back after being criticized for the Jets’ being shut out last week in Denver. The Jets took some shots that were either called or they let Wilson make plays. "There were certain shots that Mike was going for the jugular the entire game," Robert Saleh said. Saleh earned his first win as an NFL head coach and deserves credit for the way kept the team together, focused and playing hard during a rough start.
