Pettine: Revis Looks "Surprisingly Good"...

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine had no doubt Darrelle Revis would return in shape. But he didn't expect him to look this good, this quickly.
“Knowing him and the type of competitor he is, we knew he would come in in shape,” Pettine said of the cornerback, who simulated as much football action as possible – i.e., short bursts of sprinting, followed by rest – during his 36-day holdout. "…To me, he seems to be in surprisingly good shape. Again, it’s only been a couple of days, but he’s gotten a lot of work in practice. …He’s a special athlete and it was clear that he took care of himself while he was away because he knew this day would come.”
Pettine also addressed the slight strain Brodney Pool's ankle injury has put on fellow safety Eric Smith: “I think we have enough interchangeable parts that we can do some different things. Eric Smith is a guy that has proven starting-ability in this league. The thing with Eric is we have to be careful; if he does have to go, that we have to keep an eye on his reps knowing how important he is to Mike Westhoff…We don’t want to wear him out in any phase of the game.”
"I don't mind it," Smith said. "I like having a lot of different roles. It's fun being out on the field the whole time, rather than standing on the sidelines watching everybody else play."
The coordinator also said he's "very comfortable" using linebacker Jason Taylor at outside linebacker on almost every down with Calvin Pace (foot) out.
“He’s the ultimate professional," Pettine said of the 36-year-old, who was brought here to be a pass rusher in certain situations. "He’s in fantastic shape for a guy that has as many years in the league as he does. He’s been a great team guy, he’s bought into the concept…And he’s absorbed the playbook.”

…Speaking of Eric Smith, the safety spoke candidly about the "one-finger-in-the-air show of solidarity between the Vikings and Saints before their game Monday night.
"I dont know what to think of that," he said. "It shows unity on our part, but i don't necessarily know what that's going to do to get a deal done. I think it's great that we're all sticking together and we're trying to show the owners that. But i dont even know if they paid attention to them or not."
As of now, he said, the Jets don't have any plans to do a similar thing before Monday's game against the Ravens.
