Practice report: Rex peeved by 'sloppy' play

CORTLAND – Rex Ryan summed up Monday’s practice in one word: Sloppy.

“That’s the best way to describe it – on both sides of the ball,” said the Jets coach, referring to the three false starts to open the team period, plus a safety. “It was not our best day. ...It’s not acceptable.”

Ryan also highlighted Geno Smith’s two interceptions (during 7-on-7s), adding that open receivers weren’t even targeted at some points. “And then to top it off,” said the coach, “the defense was horrible in the last team period. So not a whole lot going for us.”

Though Ryan praised the play of veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez, the coach called out the team’s overall lack of focus and attention to detail.”

“There were too many mistakes on both sides of the ball,” said Ryan. “And I made sure they understand where I’m coming from. Especially when you come off a day off, it can’t be like that. You’ve got to be focused and you’ve got to keep moving forward. So I was not happy with the practice today.”

“We’re still discussing all that stuff,” Ryan said. “Right now, we’ll let that kind of play out.”

If they stay true to their current QB rotation, Sanchez would take first-team reps on Tuesday (as he did on Monday) and Smith would practice with the starters on Wednesday before Thursday’s travel. But it’s anyone’s guess as to what the team will do.

“We’re still in the process of going through the competition and things like that,” Ryan said. “We do rotate theme very two days. We may change that up. Tomorrow, we may go with Geno or whatever. We’ll see how it goes. But we’ve been rotating those guys pretty well and making it an even competition. With that, the guy that doesn’t start the game is still going to get opportunities with the ones.”

Neither quarterback provided any insight on the matter.

Said Sanchez: “I have no idea, Ask (offensive coordinator) Marty (Mornhinweg), I have no idea.”
