FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The Jets will be without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams for one to two weeks because of a calf injury he suffered in practice Thursday.
Left guard John Simpson will miss about the same period of time because of a back issue. Aaron Glenn said the Jets are just being “precautionary” in holding out the two key players on both lines.
Williams tweaked the calf during individual drills Thursday, left practice and never returned. The Jets hope his injury is short-term. He is the anchor of the Jets’ defensive line and the most proven player in his position group, which features Byron Cowart, Jay Tufele, Phidarian Mathis and Derrick Nnadi.
“We want to make sure that this player is going to be good,” Glenn said. “We know what he’s all about. We know what he can do. And we want to hold him out and we’ll see how that goes.”
Glenn said Williams had a similar injury in the past and that “he’ll be just fine.” He said the same thing about Simpson.
Rookie safety Malachi Moore also missed practice with an oblique strain. Glenn didn’t express any concern about Moore’s injury.
Second-year running back Braelon Allen returned to practice after missing the previous two with knee soreness. Allen participated in everything and moved well.
