FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Despite rehabbing from two injuries and spending much of the offseason away from his new defense, Jets safety LaRon Landry had "no doubt" he'd return for minicamp "and not be ready."

"I'll be ahead of the game," Landry said after Wednesday's's practice, which he spent doing more individual agility drills.

In his first interview since his March signing, Landry said he spent two or three weeks with the Jets during the offseason strength and conditioning program, but returned to Arizona to have stem cell treatments for the Achilles tendon/heel injury that ended his 2011 season with the Redskins.

His rehab has gone so well that Landry said he's "shocked." As for his training camp status, he said: "As of right now, I'm progressing. Things are going real well. Can't wait to get back out there and be with the team."

He added: "I'm not there yet. But I'm not taking any steps back."

Rex Ryan concurred Landry was ahead of the trainers' schedule, but he cautioned the trainers' need to not "overdo things" the next few days. "He's on the right track and I feel good about it," Ryan said.

Landry, who has received platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the past, also had an "AmnioMatrix" -- a stem-cell procedure that "is way more advanced than the PRP," he said -- in February in Arizona. He later had another PRP to "top it off." Originally, he expected to get three AmnioMatrix treatments, but said he needed only one.

Though he had his playbook while he was rehabbing, Landry said the biggest challenges will be picking up the verbiage and getting on the same page as the rest of the secondary.

Linebacker Bart Scott said Landry would have been ahead of the learning curve had he been around to hear the terminology in meetings. But Scott thinks there's plenty of time to master it as long as Landry gets a lot reps in practice. To speed the process, Scott suggested Landry learn the concepts rather than plays, because "the call just changes who's doing it."

Landry said he knew the Jets would be a good fit for him after hearing his brother Dawan, a former Raven, talk about Ryan. "He was like, 'As soon as you visit the Jets, sign,' " Landry said. "He kept telling me the whole time: 'No need to look nowhere else. You're going to love it.' "

Landry is convinced he will, even though he hasn't taken a single practice rep.

"It enables me to play how I know how to play," he said of the Jets' defense. "I give 110 percent from start to finish. I leave it all out on the field."

News and notes: WRs Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill (hamstrings) did individual drills, but not team drills. Holmes declined to speak to the media for a second straight day . . . Tim Tebow took two snaps with the first team in the red zone, even though Ryan said the backup QB wouldn't work with the starters this week . . . DE Quinton Coples (back) and LB Bryan Thomas (Achilles/shoulder) participated in team drills, while TE Brian Linthicum (quadriceps), WR Patrick Turner (hamstring) and DL Marcus Dixon (calf) were out . . . Thursday's's final minicamp practice is open to fans. Training camp practice will be open to the public in Cortland July 28 and Aug. 23-24 in Florham Park. Hofstra will host a "Family Night Practice" Aug. 21.
