The hits just keep on coming for the Patriots defense.

Two weeks after five-time Pro Bowler Vince Wilkfork suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, New England likely will lose another defensive stud. According to multiple reports out of Boston Jerod Mayo is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a torn pectoral muscle Tuesday.

News of the surgery was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

Losing Mayo, the team’s top tackler (55 total), would be a huge blow for New England. The Patriots – who are preparing for Sunday’s game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium – already are without Wilfork, and the status of wide receiver Danny Amendola (head), tight end Rob Gronkowski (forearm) and guard Dan Connolly (head) are still unknown.

Cornerback Aqib Talib also was injured in Sunday’s dramatic comeback win over the Saints – though he returned to the game.
