Report: Tim Tebow's camp says his NFL career is 'probably over'
Tim Tebow’s popularity remains as high as ever. However, the former Jets backup quarterback has yet to garner any attention from NFL teams since his April release.
And, according to an ESPN the Magazine article, Tebowtime in the NFL may be a thing of the past. Senior writer David Fleming claims that now members of Tebow’s camp are “privately admitting that his NFL run is probably over.”
That may not come as a surprise to some football fans, considering just two teams – the Jets and the Jaguars – were interested in Tebow after he helped lead the 1-4 Broncos to the playoffs in 2011. But after the former Florida Gator was traded from Denver to the Jets, he wound up being a seldom-used piece in Tony Sparano’s stagnant offense.
With the writing on the wall for months, Tebow’s tenure with the Jets ended after 15 games, eight pass attempts and 102 yards rushing.
In the article, Fleming quotes one NFC scout's assessment of Tebow: "He's not a quarterback. When you look at his run two years ago, when you watch the tape and break it down, he wasn't really doing anything that impressive. He's a tough guy, a great leader, a great person. But he isn't a good enough quarterback to have all the distractions that come with him."
Many assumed Jacksonville would come calling this past offseason. But new Jags GM Dave Caldwell made it clear he had no interest in having Tebow – a hometown hero – play in his stadium. So now, Tebow fans must wait a little longer to see where – if anywhere – the former Heisman Trophy winner lands.
Though it seems his NFL career could be over, Tebow may have a career in the Arena Football League. If he wants it.
Philadelphia Soul part owner Ron Jaworski reached out to Tebow a day after the Jets released him.
“I love the guy,” Jaworski, a former Eagles QB, told the Associated Press. “I want him here just for his leadership.”
