In theory, a color-coded wristband would simplify things for Geno Smith. But Rex Ryan said Thursday that he made the decision to steer away from the red-yellow-green play-calling system because he doesn't want to clutter the rookie's head and hinder his development.

"I don't want him to sit back and be focused on other things,'' said Ryan, who, in the span of a few hours Wednesday, backed off after saying he'd consider using the same system he implemented in Mark Sanchez's rookie season in 2009.

"Just play the position,'' Ryan said, "and I think he's going to be just fine.''

But Ryan is determined to cut down on turnovers. That's why running backs coach Anthony Lynn is working on ball protection in practice with Smith, who has 11 of the Jets' 12 turnovers.

Two Jets appeal finesMuhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples said they plan to appeal their NFL fines for their joint hit on Titans quarterback Jake Locker.

Wilkerson, who reportedly was fined $15,785, said the NFL punished him for roughing the passer, but "if it was roughing the passer, the ref would've thrown the flag,'' he said. Coples reportedly was nailed for $7,875 for "a personal foul or inappropriate hit,'' he said. "But one thing about it, it's up for debate.''

Jet streamsRyan hasn't officially ruled out Santonio Holmes or Stephen Hill, but it's unlikely either will play Monday night. "You guys figure it out,'' the coach said with a smile. "It looks like they never practiced today.'' Asked if he expects rookie Dee Milliner to play, Ryan said: "Not if he's not going to practice.''

Oday Aboushi (knee), Kellen Winslow (knee) and Chris Ivory (hamstring) also didn't practice. Clyde Gates (knee) and CB Darrin Walls (shoulder) were limited . . . The Falcons already have ruled out OT Sam Baker and LB Akeem Dent. RB Stephen Jackson did not practice and is unlikely to play. WRs Julio Jones (knee) and Roddy White (ankle) were limited.
