Miscues are part of training camp. But after Monday's off day, Rex Ryan wasn't pleased with the amount of penalties he saw on the practice field or his offense's sloppy play.

"I don't get it," the Jets coach said. "You're not as sharp, the focus doesn't seem to be there. We started pretty good, and then at the end of it, it kind of waned a little. Maybe not everybody. I think the defense was pretty sharp at the end. [But] you have to throw them under the bus, too, so it doesn't matter."

While quarterbacks Geno Smith (7-for-9, one sack) and Michael Vick (4-for-6, one sack) had a decent day during the team's run-heavy practice, the defense was a step ahead. The unit also gave the offense fits when it came to pass protection.

Receiver David Nelson said the day off contributed to the lack of cohesion ("Guys just trying to refocus"), but he promised a better performance on Wednesday. "Today was not acceptable by any means. . . . I would say defense won today."

Rex: Ideal QB situation

Ryan won't even consider the possibility of Smith getting off to a bad start this season. But with that said, Ryan finally feels comfortable with his QB depth chart. In 2013, Matt Simms was Smith's backup -- and both QBs entered the season with zero starts. "I don't know if you'd call that an ideal quarterback situation," Ryan said. "But what we have right now might be considered ideal."
