Rex to media: You're not the boss of me

For all you columnists, bloggers and beat writers who think Tim Tebow needs to get on the field more -- save your breath and your hard drive space.

Rex Ryan isn't interested in hearing your thoughts on how he goes about his business -- especially when it comes to his backup quarterback.

The “Tebow Package” will remain classified until further notice. 

“That’s the beauty of it,” the Jets coach said. “We control it. You know what I mean? The media’s not going to drive it, and the opponent, they’re not going to have any idea what they’re going to do with them. And I’m certainly not going to let them know, ‘Hey, by the way, Tebow’s going to play 50 snaps this week.’

“I’m never going to give you a legitimate answer. I think I know the answer, but I’m not going to give it to you. I think it’s in our best interest that our opponents don’t know exactly (what we’re doing with Tebow). Is the Wildcat going to be really featured this week? Or is it more backburnered. And I think that plays into our advantage.”

No one’s asking Ryan to provide diagrams of their game plan each week. But why give a guy $2.5 million dollars to just stand on the sidelines the first two weeks of the season?

Ryan consistently refers to Tebow as a “good football player” rather than a “good quarterback” -- and, believe me, there's a difference. The coach already said he didn’t trust Tebow to throw the ball in an obvious passing situation against the Steelers. So if your backup quarterback isn’t trusted to throw when the offense is scuffling, and he’s only broken off six runs in two games – why is Tebow here? 

His involvement over the first two weeks of the regular season -- six carries, 33 yards -- have been rather pedestrian, considering the Jets were struggling to generate offense in the second half against the Steelers. But Ryan refuses to give any indication that Tebow's role will be expanded over the coming weeks.

“There could be more opportunities down the road, there could be less,” he said Monday, whena asked about Tebow's limited involvement on offense. “I’m happy he’s here. I can tell you that much. As we’ve said from Day 1: this guy’s a good football player. We’re not going in saying he has to get “X” amount of snaps. That’s not what we do. …Again, things go into it. Matchups are a consideration, a lot of different things go into things.”
