Rex: "We don't need to be that team"
Distractions and negative publicity have a way of finding the Jets this season.
And Rex Ryan is sick of it.
The Jets head coach said Wednesday that he addressed his team regarding their string of poor decisions – the latest of which is Braylon Edwards’ DWI arrest in New York early Tuesday morning.
“Really a disappointing deal with Braylon Edwards,” Ryan said. “I talked with Braylon last night. I talked to several people. I talked with the team this morning and what I mentioned was, quite honestly, I’m basically tired of dealing with some of these issues.”
“I’m tired of the embarrassment to our owner and this organization and let’s just end it. Let’s stop it. Whatever it is, however severe or minor, we don’t need to be that team. This team works too hard and everything else to be looked at in this light.
"I mean, yeah, we have a great time. There’s no question we have a lot of fun. We get after it. We play a physical brand, but guys, the other thing is that you guys know -- those of you who are here everyday and cover us -- this football team works. And we compete, we study, we do everything that it takes to win. But that’s what we’ve got to be focused on instead of some other issues. And myself being as guilty as anybody.”
Aside from the heat they took over their profanity-laced HBO series “Hard Knocks” and their bombastic talk of being Super Bowl contender, the Jets were investigated by the NFL last week for improper conduct involving a Mexican TV reporter. Last season, Ryan was fined $50,00 by the league for flipping the bird at Miami Dolphins fans at an MMA event.
The coach, however, labeled Edwards' DWI arrest an "isolated incident."
"I think we're a very disciplined team," he said.
