FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Damien Woody got a bit of bad news Monday.
The Jets' right tackle had an MRI on his right knee, which revealed some damage that wasn't found in his original diagnosis three weeks ago. Woody is scheduled to undergo an arthroscopic procedure Wednesday morning, leaving him definitely out for this week's matchup with the Steelers in Pittsburgh and possibly until the postseason - if the Jets make it that far.
He wasn't given a specific time frame as to how long he'll be out.
"These things, it could be wide-ranging," Woody said. "Just knowing myself, I'm going to try to get back as soon as possible . . . They haven't set a timetable or anything like that. We are going to get it done and then we are just going to see how it responds after that."
Woody, who'll be replaced by Wayne Hunter, left early in the first quarter of Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Dolphins and didn't return after his knee locked up on him. He initially sprained his MCL in the Jets' victory over the Texans on Nov. 21, and despite not practicing much since, he played against Cincinnati and New England.
He said he's not sure if playing these past two-plus games made the injury worse, but he knew he couldn't continue in his present condition.
"It's just one of those situations where they just want to go in and clean it up because I can't keep going week to week like this, especially not being able to finish a game," Woody said. "It's something we decided it's in the best interest to just go in and get it done."
Extra points
Rex Ryan said safety Eric Smith (concussion) probably is out for Sunday's game, but he's anticipating that safety James Ihedigbo (right knee) will play. "He did some running," Ryan said. "He did some change-of-direction stuff Sunday, so I'm hopeful that he'll be ready to go."
