Ryan won't chime in with rings again
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Even though New Year's Day is still a good two-plus months away, Rex Ryan already has come up with a resolution.
"The big news of the day," Ryan said Monday, "is from now on . . . I will no longer use the word 'rings' anymore."
Ryan said every time he utters the word "rings," it seems to get him in trouble. Last week, he said he'd have a couple of rings if San Diego had hired him in 2007 rather than Norv Turner, a comment he said was unintentional and for which he apologized a day later.
Ryan also created headlines in June 2009 when he said in a radio interview that he didn't come here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings.
"So I'm not going to use that word anymore," he said. "No more of those things. I get crushed every time I say it. No votes, because I do get crushed every time I say it."
But there's one familiar phrase the Jets coach still can utter.
"Super Bowl?" he said, repeating the question, "I can use that one. But it's just 'rings.' "
More Maybin
Aaron Maybin's sack Sunday was his third in his four games since rejoining the Jets after getting waived during the first week of the season. The linebacker is tied with Calvin Pace for the team lead in sacks with three and also has three forced fumbles.
"We need to get him on the field more," Ryan said.
That's fine with Maybin, the former Bills first-round pick who's trying to shed his "bust'' label.
"There's a certain confidence that the coaching staff here has in me to go out and make plays," Maybin said. "For whatever reason, that confidence wasn't there in Buffalo . . . I think that's the biggest thing."
Extra points
Jets rookie defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis, who injured his ankle Sunday, has his left leg in a walking boot similar to the one Nick Mangold had. Ryan said Ellis will hang around the facility this week getting treatment and rehabbing . . . Ryan said if the Jets weren't on the bye and there were a game this week, defensive end Mike DeVito (knee) probably wouldn't play.
