Reggie Nelson opted not to come to the Jets. The safety Sunday agreed to re-sign with the Bengals instead, according to reports. Terms weren't disclosed.
The decision leaves the Jets still looking for safety help. Eric Smith is their lone player with real experience at the position. Brodney Pool signed with Dallas, and Jim Leonhard, recovering from a season-ending knee injury, is a free agent.
LaRon Landry, whose time with the Redskins appears to be up after they signed Brandon Meriweather, visited the Jets this weekend. He has visited the Patriots and reportedly will meet with the Lions early in the week.
The Jets coveted Nelson, 28, who visited them Friday and Saturday. He had 85 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions last season. Once news broke of Nelson's impending signing with the Bengals, Antonio Cromartie tweeted "I guess I'm moving to FS,'' meaning free safety.
The cornerback added that the move would be more about inserting Kyle Wilson to start opposite All-Pro Darrelle Revis. "The reason I say I'm moving to FS,'' Cromartie wrote, "is because Kyle is becoming a good corner and I don't mind the move.''
