FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Josh McCown and Davis Webb took turns throwing to receivers running one-on-none routes to the end zone at the start of practice. Sam Darnold just stood there watching the other two Jets quarterbacks.

What seemed obvious Thursday when Darnold missed practice for the second straight day became official Friday. The rookie again sat out practice for Sunday’s game against the 7-3 Patriots at MetLife Stadium and will miss his second straight game with a strained right foot.

“He didn’t practice, so he’s out,” Todd Bowles said.

So it should be old-timers’ day, so to speak, when it comes to the quarterbacks: McCown, 39, versus Tom Brady, 41. Brady was limited in practice by a knee injury Wednesday and missed practice Friday with an illness. He was listed as questionable, but he’s expected to be out there.

McCown will need to do better than he did in the last game before the bye. He made his season debut Nov. 11 against the Bills and went 17-for-34 for 135 yards and two interceptions in the 41-10 loss, which marked the 3-7 Jets’ fourth consecutive defeat. The offense has scored only four touchdowns during this skid.

“It’s not on Josh,” Bowles said. “It’s on the offense in general. As a team, we have to play better .  .  . Everyone plays better, then we’ll do better.”

Bowles said he doesn’t know if Darnold will be ready for the following game at Tennessee. McCown will keep the seat warm in the interim.

“He’s a veteran quarterback and he’s been leading us pretty well at practice, keeping it simple, up pace and all fast,” rookie tight end Chris Herndon said.

Left guard James Carpenter didn’t practice all week and is doubtful with a shoulder issue. He has opened every game — 58 straight — since joining the Jets in 2015 and played every snap dating to the beginning of last season. Spencer Long has started eight games at center, but he also can play guard.

“Spence is getting the call this week,” left tackle Kelvin Beachum said. “But for sure, I miss Carp .  .  . It’s going to be different, but right now, we’re going through a lot as a team. So we’ve got to find a way to make it happen with Spence.”

Quincy Enunwa said “getting rid of unforced errors” — penalties, turnovers — would help get the offense back on track.

“Regardless of what the record is, you still have a job to do at the end of the day,” the receiver said. “Even if your team goals may not be what you want them to be, your personal goals should still be to keep competing and putting it on film that you’re going to fight no matter what.”

Notes & quotes: Receiver Robby Anderson (ankle) and linebacker Brandon Copeland (elbow) practiced on a limited basis and are questionable .  .  . safety Marcus Maye (shoulder, thumb) is doubtful .  .  . Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (ankle, back) is questionable but expects to play.
