Santonio Holmes probably won't play Friday night

SANTONIO HOLMES, wide receiver
Holmes was treated for back tightness on Aug. 15. He also suffered a sore rib and a hamstring injury during training camp. Holmes is listed as doubtful for the Jets second preseason game against the Giants, and he's questionable for the start of the regular season.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Santonio Holmes sounded less than optimistic about his chances of playing Friday night. But despite frustrations about missing the Jets' first preseason game, the wide receiver said he believes a higher power is at work.
"I think it happened for a reason and for what reason, I can't put my finger on it," he said Tuesday, referring to the rib injury he suffered during Saturday's Green & White scrimmage. "But I think God has a plan. And what's at stake right now is longevity, and not right now."
Holmes, who hasn't practiced since he was drilled by Antonio Cromartie, initially told the training staff that he felt "it pop" after one of his teammates fell on him. He assumed he aggravated a 2008 rib injury, resulting in either torn cartilage, "separated" ribs, or "all of the above."
"It was the first thing I mentioned to the trainers; that I think something is broke," said Holmes, who has been working on "functional movements" and trying to stay active.
"I'm getting better every day right now," he said. "Taking it one day at a time and when I feel the need for contact and the trainers are ready for me to have contact, I'll be ready to roll."
Jets streams
Darrelle Revis missed some individual and team drills with lower-back tightness, according to a team spokesman . . . Nick Mangold, who watched his younger sister Holley compete in the London Olympics this weekend, rejoined the team but missed his second straight practice . . . OL Dennis Landolt, who was carted off the field, suffered a subluxed or dislocated knee, according to Rex Ryan . . . Ryan said he "totally" disagrees with Boomer Esiason's assessment that the Jets should cut Tim Tebow. "I think Tim is an excellent football player," the coach said. "He's great for our team." . . . The Jets signed WRs Stanley Arukewe (Troy) and Joseph Collins (Weber State).
