FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Brian Schottenheimer sat in his office early Tuesday morning, trying to make sense of it all.

"I was kind of laughing," the offensive coordinator said Thursday. "I went back to the thought that last year against Houston, we put up 470 yards in the first game. But we weren't that good. We just put up 470 yards, things happened.

"We are not a 178-yards-a- game offense. So somewhere in between, there's answers."

Schottenheimer said he's not concerned, but he's definitely disappointed with the lack of production in Monday's season-opening loss to the Ravens. The Jets struggled mightily, posting a mere 176 yards, converted only 1 of 11 third downs and didn't look to go deep much.

Mark Sanchez completed just 10 of 21 attempts for 74 yards and checked the ball down to his receivers for most of the game. But Schottenheimer, who admitted he wishes he could have a few potentially conservative calls back, said some of the onus for the stumbles fall squarely on him - and not solely on his quarterback.

"I'll take some [blame] for that as well," Schottenheimer said. "I had a hard time getting into a rhythm, I really did.

"It probably was not my most aggressive game calling it," he added. "But again, when you are struggling on third down, the thing you are going to try to do is manage the sticks a little bit."

Schottenheimer also addressed some things that have cropped up the past week, striking down a rumor that he had an altercation with Rex Ryan in the coach's room after the loss. "Absolutely not. Rex is great," he said. "I can't remember any heated words we've ever had, going even back to last year."

Additionally, Schottenheimer said he didn't do anything wrong when he attended the "Jets West Camp" in Southern California in July that was organized by Sanchez.
