FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It's not like he was thinking he "can't wait" to take a pay cut, but Bart Scott said Tuesday that he reworked his contract for one reason.
"I'm more concerned with winning," said Scott, who was due to pocket just under $5 million in base salary this season. "We have some great talents and some guys who deserve to be here. I'm all about winning. A lot of people can say that with their mouth, but I like to try to show it with my actions.
"Whatever I have to do to see this thing through to win a Super Bowl, I'm all for it."
However, because of his restructured contract, the linebacker is in the same boat as the other veterans who have new deals: he's unable to practice until Thursday, when the NFLPA plans to be recertified as a union and ratify a new collective-bargaining agreement.
As one might imagine, Scott "can't wait" to practice Thursday. "Oh, of course," he said. "But with the rules, we have to go through a three-day period where we have to have soft shells on, and they [those who've already been practicing] will have pads on. We'll just be going through the motions again. I'm still locked out, by the way."
Wilkerson to start
Muhammad Wilkerson has been in camp for less than a week. But that didn't stop Rex Ryan from naming the first-round pick a starter at defensive end. "He's the starting defensive end right now, the day he walked in here," Ryan said. "That's why we drafted him, not to be a backup. We need him to be a player. He's starting right now."
Extra points
The Jets signed DB DaJuan Morgan . . . Ryan talked up free-agent linebacker Garrett McIntyre as someone who's catching his eye.
