Tebow takes reps with first-team; Maybin loses cool

CORTLAND -- In preparation for the Jets' first preseason game, Tim Tebow took a two reps with the first-team starters during 11-on-11 drills Wednesday.

The result: a 60-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Turner.

Tebow downplayed the two snaps, saying that he's been in "once or twice" with the first team offense. But during his post-practice interview with the media, the backup quarterback divulged a rather interesting tidbit about that Turner play.

Turns out, the Jets called the same zero blitz scheme on Tuesday's 60-yard TD pass as they did on Tebow's game-winning, 20-yard TD against the Jets last year in Denver. Thanks to Timmy's feet, the Broncos won the game, 17-13.

On the Turner practice TD, Tebow got flushed out of the pocket and rolled left -- and when he saw linebacker Bart Scott coming free, Tebow tried "to make a little miss and get to the outside" before finding Turner on the corner route against Cromartie.  

"Me and coach [Rex] Ryan were laughing about it before because it was a blitz zero look, where they bring in everybody -- regardless of your protection, they're going to bring in one more than you can block," said Tebow.. "...Same play that they ran against me when I broke contain when we played them last year. So we were laughing at that."

Later, the backup quarterback threw a nice, deep TD pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland during 7-on-7s. Unofficially, Tebow finished 7-of-11 with a "sack," while starter Mark Sanchez finished 6-of-11 with an interception.

Ryan also downplayed the significance of playing Tebow with the ones. The coach said it was done strictly because Sanchez was 4-for-4 and Ryan "had to give the defense a chance because the offense was rolling."

Ryan also was very complimentary of Turner, calling the fourth-year wide receiver "smart and durable."

Aaron Maybin drew the ire of the coaching staff (Sanchez) during practice. After the linebacker hit Matt Simms' arm while the fourth-string QB was releasing the ball, Sanchez yelled at Maybin. Later on, Maybin was flagged for what appeared to be an unnecessarily hard hit on a receiver near the far sideline. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine shouted at Maybin, who walked to the sideline.

"We love the effort, love his intensity, but like we said the other day, 'You've got to compete to the last second and don't go overboard because you risk hurting a teammate. The No. 1 rule around here is 'protect the team,' so we've got to do that.'

Sanchez said his teammates "absolutely" got Ryan's message, following the impromptu gassers on Tuesday. "There were a couple chances today where guys were really ready to square off again. And that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that drive to do it and want to fight the other team ... but you've got to do it the right way and do it start. So I think guys really understood the message and Rex wasn't joking around."

Ryan said WR Santonio Holmes (rib), WR Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) and NT Sione Po'uha (forehead stitches/back) will be OUT for Friday's preseason game in Cincinnati. It's still unclear whether RT Wayne Hunter (stiff lower back) will be OK to play.

...Nick Mangold returned to practice following his weekend trip to the Olympics. The Jets center said he wanted to see his sister compete in London all along, but he needed to get his teammates "blessings" before leaving training camp.  ...CB Darrelle Revis (lower back stiffness) participated fully in practice after sitting out a few position and team drills on Tuesday. ...RB Joe McKnight, CB Julian Posey, LB Ricky Sapp and RB John Griffin started practice in the rehab group along with Holmes, Kerley and Hunter.

RB Bilal Powell (again) had several nice runs in practice ...LB Josh Mauga picked off Sanchez on a pass intended for Powell.
