Aaron Maybin is going to have to jump-start his career somewhere else.

A day after Rex Ryan said the linebacker did enough to earn one of the three final spots on the team with his play in Thursday's preseason finale, the Jets waived the Bills' former first-round pick Sunday, ending his three-week-plus stint with the team.

Maybin, who hadn't recorded a sack in his two regular seasons with the Bills and was trying to shed the "bust'' label, was the biggest name to be handed his walking papers when the Jets did their usual roster-tweaking the day after the NFL mandated that all rosters be trimmed to 53 players.

The Jets also waived defensive tackle Martin Tevaseu, a reserve behind Sione Pouha and Kenrick Ellis, and defensive back Isaiah Trufant, who was signed Thursday and played in the Jets' 17-7 preseason-ending loss to the Eagles.

The team announced it placed rookie third-string quarterback Greg McElroy on injured reserve, ending his season after he suffered a dislocated right thumb against the Eagles. McElroy had surgery Friday and Ryan indicated Saturday that the Jets were going to hold off on putting him on injured reserve, though that turned out not to be the case.

So with McElroy shelved for the season, the Jets plucked a familiar face off the waiver wire, signing Kevin O'Connell to serve as the No. 3 quarterback behind Mark Sanchez and top backup Mark Brunell. O'Connell, cut loose by the Dolphins on Saturday, already is familiar with the Jets' system. He spent two seasons with the Jets and was waived by them July 27.

The Jets' flurry of moves didn't end there.

They picked up three others off waivers, nabbing offensive lineman Colin Baxter from San Diego, wide receiver Mardy Gilyard from St. Louis and safety Andrew Sendejo from Dallas.

They also signed tight end Josh Baker, linebacker Matthias Berning, guard Trevor Canfield, defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert, guard Matt Kroul, cornerback Julian Posey and wide receiver Patrick Turner to the practice squad.

Baxter's arrival signals the Jets' serious concerns about their offensive-line depth behind their starting five, especially with top backup Rob Turner sidelined indefinitely with a broken leg and Vladimir Ducasse's constant struggles going into his second season.

Baxter, an undrafted rookie free-agent center, is the second reserve lineman added in the last two days, joining Caleb Schlauderaff, who was acquired from the Packers on Saturday for a conditional draft pick.

Baxter started all but one of the 50 games he played collegiately at Arizona, seeing time at left guard and center. So he'll probably be slotted in as Nick Mangold's backup at center.

Gilyard was selected by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2010 draft and had six receptions for 63 yards in his rookie season.

Sendejo played in the UFL in 2010 before joining the Cowboys in November. The Rice graduate saw action in two games with Dallas and might have been picked up by the Jets to help provide a little insight on the scheme Rex Ryan's twin brother, Rob, will try to use when the Jets meet the Cowboys in Sunday's nationally televised season opener at MetLife Stadium.
