The Brunell Workout

Mark Brunell could be closer to finally becoming a Jet.

According to NFL.com, the veteran quarterback is working out for the Jets at the team's Florham Park, N.J. training complex today, likely the final hurdle to be cleared before the two sides come to an agreement on a deal.

Brunell's name has been tossed around for weeks, ever since the Jets initially hosted him in April. The team thought he'd be a perfect tutor/mentor/sponge for franchise signal-caller Mark Sanchez, and Rex Ryan publicly admitted the team's interest back in the spring.

But the Jets were hampered by the "Final Eight" restrictions, which essentially meant they couldn't sign an unresticted free agent until they lost one of their own. That mandate, however, was lifted last Thursday, leaving the Jets free and clear to sign the guy who backed up Drew Brees in New Orleans a season ago.

Brunell, who turns 40 in September, has played for the Packers, Jaguars and Redskins during his 17-year NFL career. He saw spot duty with the Super Bowl Saints this past season, starting one game. He completed 15 of 30 passes for 102 yards, throwing one interception.

If all goes well today and he signs soon as expected, that likely will spell the end of Kellen Clemens' days as a Jet because I don't think they'll be carrying four QBs again this year. The third-string job will be determined in preseason games, with reserves Kevin O'Connell and Erik Ainge battling it out.
