David Lazer loves his golf, playing about 100 rounds a year. The native of Huntington who is mostly a Florida resident now, he has just completed another trip to Scotland, and this recent visit was special.

Lazer made an ace at Dumbarnie Links, an acclaimed new links course not far from t St. Andrews, the home of golf. Lazer holed his 6-hybrid shot from 140 yards on the 16th, the fourth ace of his career for the 70-year-old retired attorney who had a practice in Melville.

“I was playing lousy on the back nice, I had a par and five doubles going into that hole,” Lazer said. “One-forty is kind of an in-between distance for me, I don’t really hit irons that well. So I hit the 6-hybrid which is the limit of my distance on that one. It hit right before the green, took a couple of hops on the green and was tracking right to the hole. I kind of went into a canonic state because I knew I hit it well. And my wife [Caroline Levy], that’s the first one she’s seen.”

Lazer’s first ace came in 2003 at the former Calverton Links on the third hole at 102 yards with a gap wedge. In 2012, playing the ninth hole at Southward Ho, he holed a 9-iron from 134 yards. In 2019 at Pine Hollow, where he was a member at the time, he made an ace on the 170-yard second hole with a 3-wood.

“You never know when it’s going to happen, every one is always a surprise,” Lazer said. “It was fun to get one where we were traveling, and we do travel a lot.”

Lazer’s friends are envious of his achievements, but Lazer can be envious of their prowess.

“I had lunch with a friend, I’m a 20 [handicap] and he’s a 15,” Lazer said. “Everyone who finds out says 'I’ve never had one.' And I say you are better golfer than I am and I would rather be a better golfer than I am.”

But he won’t deny he’s been one lucky golfer.
