Newsday Player of the Year: Aliya Hassett, Massapequa, M, Sr.

Aliya Hassett of Massapequa

Without Hassett, Massapequa might not be where it is today.

A four-year varsity starter, Hassett helped lead her team to its fifth straight Nassau title and solidify the program as one of the best on the Island. Coach Morgan Ortega said Hassett’s contributions to that legacy cannot be understated.

“I think that she's made Massapequa field hockey a more respected program,” Ortega said. “We've gotten to the county championships before, we've won other titles before, but it wasn't until Aliya that we started getting looks and recognition from other top schools in Nassau County and across Long Island.”

Hassett was among Long Island’s points leaders with 14 goals and 17 assists. The Wagner commit is the first Massapequa field hockey player under Ortega’s leadership to take her talents to a Division I program.

“I’m really excited to keep improving and keep pushing forward,” Hassett said. “I know I have more in me, so it’s really awesome to be able to take my game to the next level.”

“This level of play has served her really well, but it's reached its maximum,” Ortega said. “I know that players at the next level are going to challenge her more, and I'm excited for her because I know she's not done developing yet.”

Suffolk Player of the Year: Hadley Torre, Ward Melville, M, Sr.

In her 23-year career, Ward Melville coach Shannon Sioss said Torre might be the best she’s ever seen.

“We’ve always had strong players, but [Torre] is able to make those players rise to the occasion and bring out the best in them,” Sioss said. “To me, that's a true testament of the player you are, when you can make all those other athletes play at the same level as you.”

As a freshman, Torre began her varsity career as an offensive player, but transformed into a defensive weapon in the midfield.

“This group has given me so much confidence over the years,” Torre said. “When I was a freshman, I looked up to the seniors every day. They inspired me. To know I could give that back to the team and play that role for somebody else is really special to me.”

Though defensively focused, Torre is a threat all over the field. The Middlebury commit had 16 goals and six assists.

“She's impacted a lot of different players over the years,” Sioss said. “Her commitment to the program is going to live on in the players to follow because they know what her hard work has really brought to us.”
