Newsday Girls Bowler of the Year: Cira Arcangel, Sachem, Soph.

Cira Arcangel’s 220.17 average was the top mark for a girls bowler on Long Island and a big reason why Sachem finished the regular season 11-1.  

She had a 259 high game and her 709 high series ranked seventh in Suffolk.

In 35 games, Arcangel rolled a 240 or better seven times and never rolled below a 179. She bowled a 217 in Game 1 as a member of the Suffolk All-Stars at the state bowling championships.  

The sophomore improved her average by over 23 pins from her freshman season. Her prowess led Sachem to a second-place finish at the Suffolk team championship.  

Canan Bademci, Patchogue-Medford, Sr.  

Bademci makes her third consecutive appearance on the All-Long Island team and was Newsday’s Bowler of the Year in 2019. Her 215.44 average ranked fourth on Long Island this season and her 742 high series ranked first.

Kailyn Bloch, East Islip, Soph.

Her 217.03 ranked third on Long Island and her 716 high series was tied for fifth in Suffolk. She finished tied for second with a score of 454 over two games in the Suffolk singles/doubles tournament.  

Dakota Collins, East Islip, Fr.

Collins ranked sixth in Suffolk with a 207.97 average and ranked third with a 290 high game.. She rolled a 259 for the Suffolk all-star team in Game 3 at the state championships.

Shannon Darby, Sachem, Sr.  

Darby’s 208.69 average ranked fifth in Suffolk. Her 268 high game ranked eighth, a number she hit twice during the season. Darby tied for second with Kailyn Bloch at the Suffolk singles/doubles tournament.

Emily Kulkarni, Sachem, Sr.  

Kulkarni had a 207.08 average and a 716 high series as she rounded out Sachem’s terrific trio. The senior came one roll away from a perfect game, achieving a 297 on Dec. 2. 

Michaela Palumbo, Mineola, Soph.

Palumbo finished with the second-highest average in Nassau at 203.14. She rolled a 214 in Game 2 of the Nassau Division I championship to help lead Mineola to victory.  

Brillian Soedarmasto, Division, Sr.  

Soedarmasto had the highest average in Nassau with a 208.79. She had a 278 high game and a 710 high series. She rolled a 246 in Game 5 and a 247 in Game 6 for the Nassau All-Stars at the state championships.  

Leighanna Tolan, Central Islip, Soph.

Tolan had the second-highest average on Long Island with a 219.31. The sophomore rolled over a 240 on eight occasions and over 250 three times. Her high game of 270 ranked seventh in Suffolk.

Katelyn Wheeler, Longwood, Sr.

Wheeler bowled the first 300 in Suffolk’s regular season since 2016. Then he recorded a second 300 at the Suffolk singles/doubles tournament. She finished with Suffolk’s seventh-highest average at 207.916 and helped Longwood finish second in the Division I state championship.

Coach of the Year: David Huey, Longwood

The Lions enjoyed the taste of a Suffolk bowling championship under Huey this season. They handed Sachem its only loss of the regular season and then once again snuck by them in the county championship. Huey led Longwood to its first state tournament since 1989 and guided them to a second-place finish.
