Babylon football overtakes No. 1 spot in Big 10

We have a new No. 1! The Panthers continue to roll in Suffolk IV with a 42-13 win over Shoreham-Wading River in a semifinal playoff game. Babylon was led by Jake Carlock, who returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown and had a 28-yard scoring reception, to win its 22nd consecutive game, the longest current winning streak in football on Long Island. The Panthers will meet Glenn for the Suffolk IV title at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Stony Brook University's LaValle Stadium.
St. Anthony's won its first boys soccer state championship since 2008 on Nov. 11. Josh Weiss recorded 21 shutouts this season, breaking the school record of 16. The Friars scored 71 goals and allowed only three, the fewest in school history, assistant coach Don Corrao said.
The Chiefs captured their first state title in boys soccer with a 1-0 win over Fairport at Middletown High School. Dylan Nealis scored in the 58th minute and defenders John Romano, Chris McGrath and Kevin Mazol excelled on the defensive side. Dan Vitiello had 12 saves in the shutout, his 12th of the season.
Alyssa Iannuzzi helped bring another state title back to Massapequa by scoring the winning goal with 8:02 remaining in a 2-1 win over North Rockland in the Class AA title game. Olivia Stegner opened the scoring with her first goal of the season as the Chiefs captured the fifth state title in program history.
The Friars won for the 10th week in a row and move into the CHSFL championship for the 15th consecutive season. Quarterback Greg Galligan threw for four touchdowns in a 35-14 win over Stepinac. The Friars will meet defending CHSFL champion Chaminade on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Garden City.
6. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST GIRLS SOCCER
After dethroning two-time defending state champion St. Anthony's and defeating Sacred Heart for the league championship, the Cougars went on to win a state title after Gianna Giruox scored two goals off feeds from Bridget Patch in a 2-1 win over Kennedy Catholic. Colleen Hickey made nine saves in the win.
Halfback Curtis Jenkins rushed for 187 yards on 22 carries and one score in a 28-21 win over Syosset. The Dalers improved to 10-0 in Nassau I and meet Massapequa for the title at 10:30 a.m. at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium in Hempstead.
Haley O'Hanlon had an incredible performance in the state semifinals, recording a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Burnt Hills. Katherine Galzerano then scored the winner off an assist from Lauren Miesemer to give the Trojans a 1-0 win over Honeoye-Falls Lima in the Class A state championship game.
An impressive run finally came to an end in the Class A state final where the Flaming Arrows lost for the first time since October 2011. Shenendehowa rallied to upset Sachem East, 3-2, with a 1-0 shootout round and dethroned the two-time defending state champions. Sachem East's 50-game win streak was the sixth longest in state history.
10. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS SWIMMING
The Patriots earned the Suffolk title at Suffolk CC-Brentwood by grabbing first place in the 200-yard medley and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Junior Cassandra Willie swam a 58.14 in the butterfly and sophomore Casey Gavigan timed 58.17 in the 100 backstroke to claim individual titles.
