Stanis-Agdere pull badminton upset
Kevin Stanis and Aris Agdere pulled perhaps the biggest upset of the day at the Suffolk badminton championships Thursday as the 11th-seeded duo upended top-seeded Kevin Brant and Alex Bresailer, 15-11, 15-11, to captured the boys doubles title.
It was a hard fought day for Stanis and Agdere as needed three sets to get by Smithtown East's second-seeded duo of James Ahern and Jack Dillman in the semifinal yesterday.
In the boys singles, top-seeded Justin Lin of Smithtown West defeated No. 2 Jesse Dietrichson of Miller Place, 17-16, 15-8 for the Suffolk title.
Lindenhurst's Julie Catone needed a third set, but was able to outlast Half Hollow Hills' Hannah Finger, 11-4, 10-13, 11-1, yesterday for the Suffolk girls singles title.
In the girls doubles competition, Half Hollow Hills gained a bit of redemption as its top-seeded team of Gina Augusta and Carly Cordano defeated third-seeded Hannah Lazio and Alicia Kreamer for the Suffolk doubles championship.
