Connetquot righthander Jack Doucet is not particularly flashy. He is not the most overpowering, nor is he a man of many words.

However, he knows how to pitch — and more importantly, how to win.

Doucet pitched a four-hit shutout to lead visiting Connetquot to a 2-0 win over Commack on Thursday afternoon. Doucet lived in the strike zone, pumping 68 strikes in 99 pitches, striking out six batters and walking only three.

“Everything was working today,” Doucet said. “I just pounded the zone and put pressure on them. I was just hitting my spots, and the movement on my pitches was making them miss the barrel.”

The win keeps Connetquot (14-2, 12-2) two games ahead of Commack (11-5, 10-4) in the Suffolk League II standings with four games remaining. It also forces a rubber game for the series at Connetquot in Bohemia on Friday, giving the T-Birds a chance to clinch the league title.

Commack won the series opener, 4-2, on Monday, bringing the two teams within a game of each other. Connetquot’s bats did not muster much on Thursday, collecting four hits and one extra-base hit — none of which produced a run.

First baseman DJ Filippone lifted a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield in the first inning, driving in centerfielder Matt Lineman with the game’s first run. Lineman hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield in the third, bringing home second baseman Tyler Cope.

Lineman finished 1-for-1 with a walk, a sac fly, an RBI and a run.

“We needed those runs if we wanted to sleep better tonight,” Lineman said.

Had Doucet not outdueled the Cougars himself, the T-Birds would likely be in second place, and losers of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

“[Doucet’s] been awesome for us,” Lineman said. “He’s a guy we’ve always been able to trust, ever since I first met him on JV. I’m very grateful. Having him take us to Game 3 in a good spot is big.”

If a 2026 banner does eventually hang in Connetquot’s gym, Doucet’s gem may very well be the inflection point. Regardless of Friday’s outcome, his performance ensured the T-Birds will control their own destiny going into next week.

“I knew I had to go out there and help us win, and that just stayed in the back of my mind — and I shoved,” Doucet said. “It feels incredible.”
