Center Moriches’ baseball team posed for pictures in leftfield. When the final photo was taken, Max Rayburn lifted the Suffolk Class B plaque and kissed it midair.

Championship bliss. There’s nothing sweeter.

No. 1 Center Moriches defeated No. 2 Babylon, 3-1, in Game 2 of the Suffolk’s Class B championship series to give the Red Devils its first county title since 2022. The Red Devils won, 5-0, the day prior in Game 1.

Richie Roberts recorded the final out and earned the save with two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking two of the eight batters he faced. As the result became final, he quickly disappeared under a dogpile as his teammates stormed the mound.

“I have no words. I can’t explain it,” Roberts said. “All the emotions were going through my head.”

Center Moriches (19-3) advances to the Long Island championship to face the winner of Nassau’s Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay back at Middle Country Athletic Complex at 11 a.m. on June 6.

Alex Foster earned the win, allowing two hits in five innings with six strikeouts. He hit three batters and walked one.

Yet the standout sophomore was adamant after the game that his focus is already on the Long Island championship game, displaying the same focus he had on the mound earlier.

“Job ain’t finished,” Foster said.

Granted, there was some room for celebration as songs could be heard in the parking lot from the Center Moriches bus.

“Definitely, for the short bus ride home,” Foster said. “Then it’s onto the next.”

The game wasn’t without its offensive moments, most notably when Center Moriches’ Jack Cressy mashed a pitch deep over the raised right-centerfield wall 361 feet away.

Cressy walked to home plate and stomped his foot down. He ripped off his helmet and rolled it at a dugout waiting to engulf him in cheers.

“When I was rounding first base, my coach said, ‘That’s way gone,’ ” said Cressy, who also walked twice. “I got pretty excited from there.”

Owen Killeen took the loss for Babylon (11-12) despite four hitless innings. He allowed three hits, five walks and a hit-by-pitch. Killeen also struck out six.

Center Moriches’ JT Bonventre and Luke Rebore-Costanzo had an RBI apiece. Jonathan Basile pitched a scoreless seventh for Babylon and went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Center Moriches coach Paul Gibson said “the sky’s the limit” with this team, one that now holds a seven-game winning streak.

“It’s a great feeling. They spent a great part of the offseason working really hard,” Gibson said. “They get along really well; they have a great vibe across the group.”

Cressy agreed. Not just with his coach, but with Foster as well.

"I love this group of guys," Cressy said. "Most of us have been playing with each other since we were 9 years old in Little League. But like Alex said, job's not finished yet."
