Liz Weber's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth broke a 2-2 tie with Whitman and preserved Bay Shore's undefeated record which climbed to 17-0. Weber went 5-for-6 with three RBIs in a 13-1 win over West Babylon. Bay Shore has outscored opponents, 187-13.
2. GARDEN CITY GIRLS LACROSSE
In a battle of defending state champions, the Trojans pounded previously unbeaten Shoreham-Wading River, 20-8, in the Long Island Challenge at Mount Sinai. Garden City (14-0, 7-0 Conference I) put up 18 goals in wins on back-to-back days at South Side (18-11) and Calhoun (18-4). Sophomore Alex Bruno scored six goals against SWR, which had won 20 straight games.
As if it wasn’t already the case, the Lions established themselves as strong favorites to defend their league, Long Island and state Class A titles with a convincing 16-5 victory over highly ranked Ward Melville. Nicky Galasso and Andrew Hodgson led the offense and all the early-season question marks about the revamped defense have vanished.
4. COLD SPRING HARBOR BOYS TENNIS
Remained unbeaten with wins over Great Neck North, Syosset, and Great Neck South to improve to 11-0, clinch the Nassau Conference IA title and move one step closer to a third straight Long Island championship.
5. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS TRACK
St. Anthony’s continued its roll as it took first at the Loucks Games. Patrick Farmer led the way with a first-place finish in the 200 meters in 21.64 seconds.
The defending state Class C champions make their debut in the BIG 10. The Indians put on a defensive display in defeating Cold Spring Harbor, 7-2, Saturday night in a battle of two unbeaten Nassau Class C teams. Manhasset is 13-0 and has beaten highly regarded Garden City and powerful Chaminade.
7. GARDEN CITY GIRLS TRACK
The Garden City girls finished second at the Loucks Games in White Plains. Emily Menges won the 800 and was part of the winning 4 x 800 relay team of Michelle Rotondo, Emma Gallagher and Katie O’Neill. The Trojans also clinched a Conference Championship with another undefeated season last week finishing at 13-0.
Shannon Gilroy had 10 goals and three assists in the Tigers’ 17-2 win over East Islip, but she suffered a pulled hamstring and was forced to sit out the team’s 12-2 victory over Sacred Heart at the Long Island Challenge. The Tigers are 13-0.
The Chiefs improved to 14-0 and continue to dominate on the way to a likely Nassau title.
10. EAST MEADOW SOFTBALL
The Jets reaffirmed their dominance, going 3-0 last week to clinch Nassau Conference AA-I. They had wins over Mepham, Carey and Massapequa. Jamie Laird went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. The Jets have outscored opponents, 102-15.
