Big 10: Changes a-plenty as playoffs heat up

1. GLENN WRESTLING (remain at 1) Nick Meinsen (130 pounds) and Nick Terdick (152), the Knights’ two Suffolk champions, will represent the county titlists in the state tournament this weekend in Albany. Both are looking to become Glenn’s first state champion.
2. HALF HOLLOW HILLS WEST BOYS BASKETBALL (remain at 2) Tobias Harris scored 25 points to lead the top-seeded Colts to a 64-43 opening-round Suffolk Class AA playoff victory over Sachem North on Friday. The League IV champion Colts host No. 8 Copiague today. Harris needs only 19 points to become the 11th Long Island boys player to score 2,000 career points.
3. HAUPPAUGE WRESTLING (up from 4) The Eagles will be represented by Mark West (96 pounds) and Kevin Panebianco (135) at the state championships this weekend.
4. LONGWOOD BOYS BASKETBALL (up from 5) The No. 2-seeded Lions breezed past Smithtown East, 80-58, in their Class AA playoff opener last Tuesday. Guards Darien Davis and Tajric Boggs scored 27 points each and Paris Parks contributed 10 assists. Longwood, the League I champ, hosts No. 10 Whitman today.
5. HALF HOLLOW HILLS BOYS SWIMMING (down from 3) It’s four straight perfect years for Half Hollow Hills, which has not been beaten in regular-season meets, league championships and county championships during their run of success. The team is sending its 200 medley relay (1:39.86) and 400 freestyle relay (3:16.30) to the state championships Friday and Saturday. There were a total of 10 state qualifiers, including Matt DeBlasio in the 200 IM (1:55.90), 100 butterfly (54.23) and 100 backstroke (53.99).
6. NORTH BABYLON GIRLS BASKETBALL (up from 7) North Babylon (16-2) had the week off after getting the top seed in the Suffolk AA playoffs. The Bulldogs will host No. 8 Brentwood in the quarterfinals Wednesday. The Bulldogs are aiming to win their third county championship in four seasons.
7. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING (down from 6) The undefeated Patriots finished the season 12-0 and earned the school’s ninth straight Suffolk championship.
8. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST BOYS BASKETBALL (up from 10) The Cougars beat Colts Neck (N.J.), 75-67, in a non-league game on Saturday after completing the first undefeated CHSAA season in school history with a 77-63 victory over Holy Trinity on Friday. SJB earned a bye in the first round of the CHSAA playoffs.
9. GREAT NECK SOUTH BOYS SWIMMING (down from 8) After winning its second consecutive Nassau title and finishing undefeated in dual meets and league championships for the second year in a row, Great Neck South awaits the states. Standout Sam Mo has qualified for six solo events and also helped his team qualify for two relays (200 medley, 400 freestyle).
10. MIDDLE COUNTRY GIRLS BOWLING (down from 9) The Cougarines finished with an undefeated league record and beat East Islip in the county championship by 21 pins.

Athletes of the Week
Alexis Monserrate, Locust Valley: She scored 30 points to lead Locust Valley over Carle Place, 48-36, in the Nassau Class B championship.
Amber Davis, Center Moriches: Davis scored 26 points, including the 1,000th of her career, in a 66-47 win over Wyandanch in a Suffolk Class B semifinal.
Megan Foehl, Whitman: She scored five of her 23 points in the final 1:27 for Whitman in a 55-51 first-round win over Copiague in Suffolk Class AA.
Sara English, Smithtown West: English had 26 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots in a 70-50 win over East Islip in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA playoffs.
Jessica DeNicola, Long Island Lutheran: DeNicola had a season-high 28 points and 14 rebounds, including the winning putback with four seconds left in a 60-59 overtime win over St. Mary’s.
Matt Curry, Harborfields: He scored 26 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and added three blocked shots in the Tornadoes’ 77-37 victory over Glenn in a Suffolk Class A playoff.
Brandon Mincher, Bayport-Blue Point. The senior had 11 of his 20 points in the first quarter of the Phantoms’ Suffolk Class A playoff victory over Kings Park. He also had 10 assists.
Sheldon Hagigal, Westbury: He scored 24 points to lead the Dragons to a 67-65 Nassau Class A playoff victory over Manhasset.
