Big 10: Top dogs hold their ground
1. GLENN WRESTLING (remain at 1) The Knights’ dual-meet winning streak is at 54 after they clinched at least a share of the Suffolk League VI title with a 61-12 win at Amityville and a 55-12 victory over Mt. Sinai. Glenn (16-0) won all five duals at the ABC Duals at East Islip. Senior Matt Gannon was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as he earned his 100th career win.
2. HALF HOLLOW HILLS WEST BOYS BASKETBALL (remain at 2) The Colts (11-0) had another big week, which began with a thrilling 75-72 overtime victory over city power Bishop Loughlin. Concluded a four-win week with an 82-72 victory over Chester (Pa.) in the Prime Time Shootout in West Virginia on Saturday as Tobias Harris had 36 points and 14 rebounds.
3. EAST ISLIP BOYS BOWLING (remain at 3) The Redmen improved to 13-0 with a win over North Babylon in which senior Steve Cole bowled his first career 300 game and John Knieriemen shot a 739 series. With a 1,105.18 team average and abundant depth (eight bowlers with 200-plus averages), East Islip is the favorite to win the state title.
4. HALF HOLLOW HILLS BOYS SWIMMING (remain at 4) Hills defeated Sachem North, 99-79, and Sachem East, 95-83, to stay perfect (8-0). Two more wins next week and the Thundercolts will earn a fourth consecutive undefeated league season. Hills is the three-time league and county champion. Jonathan Hinds (100 breaststroke), Matthew DeBlasio (200 IM) and Jesse Lohrer (200 IM) have all qualified for states.
5. LONGWOOD BOYS BASKETBALL (remain at 5) The Lions (12-2) had three more one-sided victories. The highest- scoring team on Long Island put up 106 points in a win over Floyd. Darien Davis had a school-record 16 assists in addition to 19 points.
6. HAUPPAUGE WRESTLING (remain at 6) The Eagles (17-0) beat Huntington, 37-24, as Chanse Menendez defeated Duncan Murchison, 7-2, at 189 pounds to clinch the match for Hauppauge, which improved to 5-0 in Suffolk League V. Anthony Piscitello (140) and Jesse Marro (145) had back-to-back technical falls in a 49-23 win over Comsewogue.
7. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING (not ranked last week) The undefeated Patriots (11-0) make their debut in the BIG 10 after a 19-9 win over Newfield. They have not been challenged this season. Christal Nworjih went 2-0 in epee for Ward Melville, which will play Commack (10-1) on Thursday for the league title.
8. NORTH BABYLON GIRLS BASKETBALL (up from 9) The Bulldogs finally got some competition at the Kennedy Challenge in the Bronx. They defeated Woonsocket (R.I.), the defending Rhode Island Division II state champions, 65-44. Bria Hartley had 34 points, 14 rebounds and 11 steals. The Bulldogs lost to H.D. Woodson (D.C.), 50-44, on Sunday.
9. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING (up from 10) East Islip rebounded from its first loss since 2001, winning three matches in a row. The Redmen have a team average of 998.67. Lena Sorrentino has a 215 average and Tara Ernst rolls to the tune of 201.
10. GREAT NECK SOUTH BOYS SWIMMING (not ranked last week) Great Neck (9-0) ended its regular season undefeated for the second straight year, defeating Jericho, 107-77, and Port Washington, 84-79. Sam Mo, a state qualifier in the 200 freestyle, 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, also qualified in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Athletes of the Week
Zack Krischer, Comsewogue: Had a very productive week in three victories that clinched the school a playoff berth. Scored 23, 31 and 25 points plus at least six assists in each game.
Darien Davis, Longwood: Scored 19 points with a school-record 16 assists in 106-72 victory over Floyd. Scored 21 in each of the Lions’ other two games last week.
Anthony Elechi, Elmont: Had 17 points and 13 boards in a two-point win over Westbury and 18 points with 12 rebounds in a win over Floral Park.
Samuel Mo, Great Neck South: Mo, a sophomore, has already qualified for states in five events: the 200 freestyle, 200 IM, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke for defending county champ Great Neck South.
Nicholas Spinella, Sewanhaka: Senior is a state qualifier in the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Spinella qualified in the 200 IM last Thursday, posting a 1:57.73, the fastest time for the event in Nassau.
Joshua Duperoy, Central Islip: The 140-pound senior captain earned a 4-0 win over Sachem North’s Tyler Itzkowitz to seal the Pirates’ 28-27 win in the last bout Friday.
Johanna Impellizeri, St. Anthony’s: Impellizeri, usually a reserve, started and had 13 points and 14 rebounds in a 52-42 win over Middle College at the Kennedy Challenge.
