BIG 10: Ward Melville continues to impress

1. WARD MELVILLE FIELD HOCKEY The Patriots had three impressive wins, including victories against Class A elites Northport and Smithtown East. Their 3-0 win over the Bulls snapped a string of three contests between the rivals that all had 1-0 results. Abby Beltrani scored two goals in that game and in a 6-0 win over Commack. First-year starter Kim Geiger notched her first hat trick.

2. SOUTH SIDE GIRLS SOCCER Keepers Lauren Lopresti and Kelsey Berki have kept opponents off the scoreboard for the defending state Class A champs. South Side has outscored opponents 22-0 in five games. Wins over Bethpage and Malverne/East Rockaway keep South Side on top.

3. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS SOCCER John Ugar had three goals and two assists in a 9-0 win over St. Mary’s and the Friars played Farmingdale to a scoreless tie. The Friars defeated Ward Melville, 4-1, and beat St. John the Baptist, 1-0.

4. SACHEM NORTH FOOTBALL The Flaming Arrows rolled past Brentwood, 48-8, as Mike Andreassi rushed for 124 yards and two scores. Dalton Crossan added three touchdowns as Sachem North improved to 3-0. The team is ranked eighth in the tri-state MSG Varsity poll and meets undefeated Connetquot (3-0) Saturday.

5. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL They have dominated Suffolk League I, cruising to three-game sweeps over Commack and Sachem East. The Patriots have won six of the last seven county titles.

6. ST. ANTHONY’S FOOTBALL The Friars wiped out Farrell, 49-13, to go to 3-0. Quarterback Charlie Raffa has been a running and passing threat.

7. GARDEN CITY FIELD HOCKEY The Trojans continue to march. Catherine McTiernan and Tara Mahon each scored two goals as Garden City defeated Class B finalist Manhasset, 5-0. Despite graduating three All-Long Islanders, the team hasn’t skipped a beat, outscoring opponents 19-0.

8. HALF HOLLOW HILLS BOYS VOLLEYBALL The two-time defending Suffolk champs’ season-opening match against Sachem North will determine if this team is worthy of the top spot in the boys rankings.

9. FARMINGDALE BOYS GOLF The defending Long Island golf champions haven’t lost a step this season. The Dalers are 2-0, extending their conference win streak to 30 matches.

10. WEST ISLIP GIRLS SOCCER After suffering their first loss of the season to Smithtown East, Amanda Martinez and the defending Class AA Long Island champions responded with a 3-1 win over crosstown rival East Islip to improve to 6-1.

Ashley Drozd, Soph., Riverhead, girls soccer: Scored a career-high four goals, capped by the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes remaining in a 5-4 win over Copiague.

Jill Mulholland, Sr., MacArthur, girls soccer: The senior has led MacArthur to a 4-0 record, including three wins this week over Baldwin, Hicksville and Plainview JFK. Mulholland scored six goals and two assists over the last seven days (three games). She ranks second on the Island and first in Nassau in total points.

Michelle Mongiello, Sr., Sewanhaka, field hockey: In three games last week, Mongiello scored five goals and added two assists for the upstart Indians, who are 3-0-1 in their second varsity season. She leads Long Island with 11 points.

Marykate McCormick, Jr., Comsewogue, field hockey: McCormick scored three goals and had two assists in a 9-1 win over Hampton Bays.

Sarah Fuchs, Sr., Bay Shore, field hockey: Fuchs recorded her first career hat trick, scoring four goals to lead Bay Shore in a 5-2 win over Babylon.

Trudiann Patrick, Soph., Jericho, girls swimming: She set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.30) as part of an impressive performance at the Joseph Farrell Invitational on 9/24. She led Jericho to its first win at the meet.
