BIG 10: West Islip tops final spring rankings

1.WEST ISLIP BOYS LACROSSE (remain at 1) We have a spring champion in the BIG 10 and the team resides in West Islip. The Lions, ranked No. 1 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse, extended their winning streak to 21 and made it two straight state Class A titles and four in the last five years when they defeated Fairport,13-5. That followed a 20-10 semifinal victory over Lakeland/Panas and a 13-1 romp over Farmingdale in Long Island’s Class A championship. Nicky Galasso concluded a historic career at West Islip by breaking the Long Island scoring record. He had seven points (one goal, six assists) to finish with an even 500, surpassing the previous record of 498 held by Jim Zaffuto of Elmont.
2. GARDEN CITY GIRLS LACROSSE (remain at 2) The Trojans captured the school’s fifth straight Class B state title with a resounding 20-10 win over Bedford’s Fox Lane. It is the 11th state crown for the program. Barbara Sullivan was named tournament MVP after she had four goals and three assists in the title game. They finished 21-0.
3. MANHASSET BOYS LACROSSE (up from 4) The Indians won their second straight state Class C title and extended their state-best winning streak to 36 games with a 19-6 blowout over Corning East. Manhasset had beaten Putnam Valley, 13-4, in the semis and Glenn, 11-7, in the LIC. Drew Belinsky led a balanced attack with nine goals in the three games last week.
4. LINDENHURST BASEBALL (up from 5) The Bulldogs earned the school’s first Class AA state title with a 15-2 rout of Guilderland. The offense pounded 18 hits and took a 13-0 second inning lead and cruised to the title. Junior lefty Rich Vrana improved to 9-0 after he tossed a four-hitter in a 3-0 semifinal win over Valley Central.
5. BAY SHORE SOFTBALL (up from 6) Senior Liz Weber pitched a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Cicero-North Syracuse as the Marauders (27-1) claimed the state Class AA title. It was Bay Shore’s seventh state crown and first since 2005.
6. COLD SPRING HARBOR BOYS TENNIS (up from 7) The Seahawks won their third straight Long Island championship, defeating Half Hollow Hills East, 6-1.
7. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS LACROSSE (remain at 7) The Friars outlasted Chaminade to in a 9-8 overtime thriller to win the Class AAA CHSAA championship game.
8. GARDEN CITY GIRLS TRACK (not ranked last week) The Trojans captured two relay events in the state Federation meet in Vestal. The 4X800 of Taylor Hennig, Katie O’Neill, Emma Gallagher and Emily Menges set a state record in 8:49.88. They also won the 4X400 with Jenna D’Angelo, Michelle Rotondo, Catherine Cafaro and Menges in 3:47.45.
9. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS TRACK (down from 8) St. Anthony's kept rolling right along as senior distance runner Kenneth Walshak helped lead the team to a CHSAA Intersectional championship.
10. MASSAPEQUA BOYS VOLLEYBALL (remain at 10) The Chiefs dominance continued with a Nassau championship win over Port Washington. They won the title in five games.

He had a goal and six assists in Saturday’s title game to finish with 500 career points.
Drew Belinsky, Manhasset, boys lacrosse: The Penn-bound senior midfielder scored nine goals in three games and led a balanced attack that was thoroughly dominant in completing a 20-0 season with three victories last week and their second consecutive state championship.
Emily Lipari, Roslyn, girls track: She won the State Federation 1,500 meter race in 4:24.37.
Liz Weber, Bay Shore, softball: She fired a two-hitter in the state Class AA final in a 4-0 win over Cicero-North Syracuse.
Rich Vrana, Lindenhurst, baseball: The junior lefty improved to 9-0 after he tossed a four-hitter in a 3-0 state semifinal win over Valley Central.
Jen DeVito, Shoreham-Wading River, girls lacrosse: She scored three goals and earned tournament MVP as the Wildcats beat Carthage, 10-9, for the state Class C title.
