Boys bowling All-Long Island team
BOWLER OF THE YEARMatthew Farber
Plainview JFK, Sr.
Farber had a season for the ages, setting the Long Island record with a 244 average and winning the Nassau individual championship. He also bowled a 300 in that tournament -- the 13th of his career. Farber capped his stellar career with a 1,244 series to lead the Nassau team in the Sectional All-Star tournament upstate. The two-time All-Long Island selection will attend Stony Brook University and plans to bowl professionally.
THE ALL-LI TEAM
Luis Christie I Holy Trinity, Sr.
Christie, a three-time All-Long Island selection, posted a 226 average, which was the best among Catholic high school bowlers in the state and the highest ever in the CHSAA. Christie has an individual state championship, won three straight league individual titles and was part of Holy Trinity's undefeated championship team in 2010.
Tommy Genova I Sewanhaka Dist., Sr.
Genova's 233.2 average was third best in Long Island and he was a member of the Nassau All-Star team that competed at states. Genova concludes his high-school career with a loaded resume that includes two county championships, two All-Long Island selections and a second-place finish in last summer's Teen Masters national championship.
Mike Kovarick I Islip, Jr.
Kovarick upped his average 13 pins from last season and his 229.9 this year was good for second best in Suffolk. Kovarick led a young Islip team -- with just two upperclassmen -- to a county tournament berth, where he rolled a 1,207 series. He was also a member of the Suffolk All-Star team and his 1,071 helped the squad take second place in the Sectional All-Star tournament in Waverly, N.Y.
Gregg Reed I Smithtown, Sr.
Reed posted a 233.89 average this season, breaking the Suffolk record of 232.72, set by Middle Country's Matt Skalacki in 2011. Reed led Smithtown to a 12-0 regular season, the best team average, and the League II title. He also led the Suffolk team to a second-place finish in the Sectional All-Star tournament, and his 1,340 was the second-best series in the competition. Reed also was a key contributor to the Suffolk All-Star squad team that won gold in 2011. The two-time All-Long Islander is headed to St. John's.
