Herrera leads SJB to second straight title
The last two days for Caroline Herrera: roll a tournament-high series in leading St. John the Baptist to a second straight CHSAA championship . . . quickly change and rush to a scrimmage with her travel volleyball team immediately after . . . return to bowling alley Thursday to compete for the individual championship. And win that, too.
Perhaps she'll get to unwind a bit Friday. It is her 16th birthday.
Herrera, the defending league MVP, bowled a 603 to win the high series award Thursday, continuing the whirlwind winning tour. Kellenberg's Mary-Catherine Zehnder, the 2011 champ, was second (473). Katelyn Coon of SJB, who took third for high series (457), won a third high game award for her 194 in Game 2.
"This week has been tiring," Herrera, a sophomore, said, "but now that it's over, I can say it was a lot of fun. Got a lot accomplished."
Coon, a senior, reflected a bit on her career. "These four years have been rewarding," said Coon, who also is a star soccer and lacrosse player. "And to go out with a team and individual award again, representing the school, is special."
Added Mary Coon, her mother and SJB coach: "[Katelyn] joined the team as a freshman because I needed a filler spot . . . She worked her way up from being on the practice team to being one of the best."
