Holland Boder stood within striking distance throughout the day and when the opportunity arose to snatch a victory, she took full advantage.

Boder, a senior at MacArthur, overcame a 47-pin deficit in the final game and finished with a 1,181 six-game total to win the Nassau individual girls bowling championship on Tuesday at AMF Garden City.

“I was trying to stay out of my own head and focus on what was in front of me,” Boder said. “I didn’t know I was really in the running during the last game. I just tried to stay in the top six and not worry about everyone else.”

Boder began the sixth game in fourth place after rolling a 190 in Game 5. She rolled a 213 in Game 6 and finished with 16 more pins than her teammate, Abby Buenaventura (1,165 pins).

“I really tried my hardest, because getting it done in this event is really important to me,” Boder said. “I’ve managed to go upstate and compete the past three years and I’m ready to go out doing it one more time.”

Boder and Buenaventura will be joined by the next four highest finishers at the Division I individual state championships, scheduled for March 14 at AMF Syracuse Lanes. Valley Stream’s Nadia Inesta (1,136 pins), Plainedge’s Victoria Perillo (1,133), Sewanhaka’s Morgan Winchell (1,125) and Great Neck South’s Simone Chan (1,120) round out the group.

Island Trees’ Kaitlyn Lesica finished third with 1,147 pins and will compete in the Division II competition. Valley Stream’s Khloe Genova-Ross rolled the highest game of the event with a 266 in Game 5.

Jameson Barry wins boys title

With just a one-point lead going into the final game, Clarke’s Jameson Barry’s consistent approach pushed him toward a championship.

Barry totaled 1,285 pins over six games and was the only competitor to roll at least 200 in every game as he took home the boys title. He rolled a 235 high game in Game 3.

“My goal is to be consistent. Pick up all my spares and stay on the same line,” Barry said. “I was trying to make sure I averaged over 200 at least.”

Barry rolled a 216 in Game 5, jumping from third to first place by a single pin. The senior finished with a 220 in Game 6, 26 pins ahead of Syosset’s Jaiden Ng, who was second with 1,259.

“I bowled just how I would any other day, but I knew with this being my senior year, I wanted to step up,” Barry said. “You want to stay in it and once you figure things out, you know you have a chance at winning it.”

Barry and Ng will be joined by Sewanhaka’s Joshua Agliam (1,244), Bellmore-Merrick’s Riley Kolinsky (1,202), MacArthur’s Kyle Ziesig (1,178) and Clarke’s Dylan Sollitto (1,177) in the state Division I individual championships on March 14.

Seaford’s Andrew Ceraulo finished fifth with 1,191 pins and will compete in the Division II tournament. Sollitto rolled the highest overall game for the boys, with a 246 in Game 2.
