Charles Balsamo, Gary Correa each score three goals to lead Chaminade boys lacrosse
With nine minutes to go, the game was tied at nine goals between Chaminade and Fairfield Prep.
It was a back-and-forth affair all afternoon in a boys lacrosse game that wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter.
Rattling off three straight goals in the final period, Chaminade defeated Fairfield Prep, 12-9, at Rafferty Stadium in Fairfield, Connecticut on Saturday.
Chaminade (4-2 overall) was led by two players who each recorded a hat trick as Charles Balsamo had three goals and two assists and Gary Correa scored three goals. Colm Flynn made 15 saves in net.
“He’s our offensive leader so when he gets going the whole offense gets going,” coach Mike Demeo said of Balsamo.
The Flyers trailed late in the third period 8-7 and were in need of big plays to seize the game back into their control. Chaminade then scored two quick goals to bring it to 9-8 heading into the final frame up 9-8.
From there, Fairfield Prep was able to tie the score at 9 with nine minutes left in the game —and never found the back of the net again. The Flyers offense rallied with three straight goals (with Balsamo and Correa each scoring one) to finish the game and walk away with the win.
When asked what he attributes to his team turning it around to pick up the win Correa said, “We had great personnel on the field with our fastest guys who knew how to move the ball and create separation. Keeping with speed… finding the right time and place to take the shot.”
“We started sharing the ball a little bit,” Demeo said.
“(We) dug down and played a little harder on the defensive end, shutting them out in the fourth quarter.”
