Cold Spring Harbor earned a bye in the playoffs and had to wait 13 days to play in the Nassau County Class D boys lacrosse championship game.

The Seahawks needed all but three minutes to shake off the rust, before completely taking over and having a record-setting day.

No. 1 Cold Spring Harbor claimed its first county title since 2019 with its 15-1 victory over No. 2 Friends Academy (4-10) Tuesday at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.

“We knew we were going to be rusty in the beginning, but we shaved off the rust pretty quickly from the last two weeks,” Max Hawkinson said.

Hawkinson finished with three goals, including Cold Spring Harbor’s third and fourth goals in the first quarter.

Luke Giarraputo also scored two goals in the first quarter, including the Seahawks’ seventh with 1:11 left, which tied the Nassau record for most goals scored in a quarter of a boys lacrosse title game. Ten seconds later, CJ Reilly broke the record East Meadow set in 1972.

“We were very antsy to play again,” Giarraputo said. “We were just waiting and waiting for two weeks, so it felt good to get back in our groove.”

Giarraputo scored his third goal with 6:34 remaining in the second quarter to give the Seahawks an 11-0 lead. Reagan Reilly scored two minutes later to break East Meadow’s record for most goals in a half in a championship game. Cold Spring Harbor took a 13-0 lead into halftime.

“As long as we keep winning and keep moving on, that’s all that matters,” coach Dennis Bonn said. “Sometimes we win with offense and sometimes we win with defense. We’ll take whatever we can get.”

The Seahawks’ defense also tied the record for fewest goals allowed in a title game.

“We’re super solid back there,” said midfielder Ryan McGloin, who scored two goals. “Our middies have been playing good defense, too.”

Cold Spring Harbor (15-1) will head back to Hofstra for the Long Island championship against Port Jefferson on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Seahawks have beaten Syosset, Garden City and Manhasset, all of which are finalists in Nassau Class A, B and C, respectively, and they believe they can compete with any team.

“We’re as good as we want to be,” Hawkinson said. “We’ve played games where we scored six goals and won. If we possess the ball and have low turnovers, we’ll be fine against anyone.”
