Nick Gordon will remember that moment forever.
Gordon scored the golden goal with 3:19 remaining in the first overtime period of host Division’s 10-9 win over Hewlett in Nassau League III-A boys lacrosse Tuesday in Levittown. .
Gordon, a junior midfielder, had not found the scoreboard through the first three quarters, but scored the Blue Dragons’ final four goals to make sure the rollercoaster day ended with the huge upset against first-place Hewlett.
“That’s the first game-winner of my career,” Gordon said. “First ever in OT. It’s awesome. It was a great win by us. I hope we get to do this more often.”
On the opening possession of overtime, Division (6-3, 3-2) put the ball in senior midfielder Isiah Charles’ hands. He dragged the defense with him to create an opening at the cage’s left doorstep while Gordon circled from the X. Charles fed Gordon on the back door, who then took several steps away from the net.
Now in between the 8-and 12-meter arcs with his momentum carrying away from the goal, Gordon leapt into the air and ripped an overhand, right-handed shot while falling away and tucked it just inside the right goalpost to walk it off.
“We knew if [Gordon] could cut behind the goal fast enough, I could hit him and he could get the goal,” Charles said. “I can always count on him to hit the shot.”
Charles was the reason the Blue Dragons had a chance to pull off the upset. They scored six goals through three quarters, four of which were his, while the other two came off his assists.
With 8:29 left in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 6, Division coach Rob Storie called timeout after regaining possession. It was during that timeout when Gordon realized the upset was a possibility.
“I just knew I had to turn it up,” Gordon said. “I needed to put one in.”
Gordon scored 15 seconds after the timeout, and then again at the 7:35 and 4:38 marks to go ahead 9-6. That lead remained until the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1) scored three consecutive goals over the final 2:17 of regulation, with junior attackman Myles King tying the score with 21.2 seconds left.
Hewlett may have scored more fourth-quarter goals and prevented overtime had senior goalkeeper James Armellino not made six of his 14 saves during the period.
“It’s never me, it’s my defense that helps me get there,” Armellino said. “I knew how big this game was.”
