St. Dominic falls in CHSAA state Class A final
It wasn’t meant to be for St. Dominic, which lost a 14-13 heartbreaker to Monsignor Farrell on Staten Island on Sunday in the CHSAA Class A Intersectional boys lacrosse state championship.
The Bayhawks trailed by four entering the second quarter, but responded with a six-goal second quarter to take an 8-7 lead at halftime. Aiden Cromwell and JJ Ramsay were terrific on the attack, with Cromwell’s team-high four assists and three goals adding fuel to Ramsay’s fiery six goals and two assists. James Jenet added two goals and two assists in the loss.
“We told each other that we love to have our backs against the wall,” Jenet said. “We love to be in that position, we want to be the underdogs, and we want to prove everyone wrong. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.”
Monsignor Farrell (17-4) took the lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring St. Dominic, 4-2, to seal the victory.
Jenet pointed to the growth St. Dominic (9-7) has experienced through its run to the state championship.
“In the beginning of the season . . . there were a lot of issues,” Jenet said. “Everyone started getting pieced together little by little, and we went from there.”
St. Dominic made it to the state championship by defeating St. John the Baptist in the CHSAA Class A league championship, something the Bayhawks failed to do a year prior.
Senior leaders such as Jenet were critical in setting St. Dominic on a brighter path forward.
“It means the world to me [to be team captain],” Jenet said. “I wouldn’t want to take the lead with any other group of guys. We’re like a family over here at St. Dom’s.”
